The Governor of the Region Receives the Polish General Consul
On Monday, 5 December 2016, Governor Ivo Vondrák received the General Consul of the Polish Republic, Mr Janusz Bilski, in Ostrava.
At the start of the meeting the General Consul wished the new Governor much success in managing the region and affirmed that existing collaboration with Polish projects in the region and border areas would continue. During the lively discussion that followed, both representatives agreed on key areas they would concentrate on and how to continue working together as well as broadening the relationship further. These areas included using the fifteenth anniversary of partnership with the Silesian Province for strengthening cultural ties, such as in folklore ensemble exchanges, using existing university partnerships to increase student exchanges, extending collaboration in science and research, supporting the Polish minority in fulfilling their educational and cultural needs, and preparing transport infrastructure projects. Both representatives also stated that both the Moravian-Silesian and Polish regions are facing similar problems in environmental pollution, loss of population, and the transition from a coal and steel economy to a new technologies economy, and that mutual exchanges of experience would be an enormous advantage when dealing with these issues.
At the close of the meeting Governor Vondrák thanked Consul Bilski for his election congratulations and said, “I consider working with the neighbouring Polish regions to be a great opportunity for both parties to successfully deal with the pressures placed on us today by global trends. Under my management, the Moravian-Silesian Region will continue to increase contact with partner Polish regions and will support general cooperation between Czech and Polish public institutions and private projects.”
