The world’s leading conference on blogging and travel is heading to Ostrava

TBEX (The Travel Blog Exchange), the world’s largest gathering of bloggers, vloggers, travel content creators, and tourism professionals active in social media will be held in Central Europe for the first time in its history. The TBEX Europe 2018 conference will be held in Ostrava from the 26th to 28th July 2018.

CzechTourism, headquarters of the Czech tourist industry, together with the Moravian and Silesian Region and the City of Ostrava announced on Monday, 5th March 2018, that a year-long marathon of negotiations has resulted in successful candidacy and they have been given the opportunity to host this prestigious and influential travel-media event. This conference annually attracts more than 600 travel influencers from around the world, whose 300 million readers could greatly increase awareness of the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic is a destination in the very heart of Europe. Considering the numerous inspiring stories, unusual travel experiences, and historical and natural beauty, it is little wonder that this country with 10 million inhabitants attracts roughly the same number of visitors each year.

Ostrava, a city that still often looks like a location from a Jules Verne novel in some of its areas, is one of the jewels waiting to be discovered by foreign tourists. “We are looking forward to all of those creative digital gurus arriving and telling us what they think of our city. Ostrava has changed fundamentally over the last few years. We are proud of our industrial tradition. Instead of rejecting it, we are taking that tradition in a new direction. We want to be a creative, cultural, and environmentally friendly city that is attractive to its residents and visitors. Ostrava already boasts some of the most frequently visited tourist locations in the Czech Republic that aspire to be included in the UNESCO list, including the former industrial premises in the Lower Vítkovice Area. The whole city is striving for the European Green Capital 2020 title,” said Mayor of Ostrava Tomáš Macura.

In July this year, one week after the international multi-genre music festival Colours of Ostrava, more than 600 conference delegates from around the world will gather in the central town of the Moravian and Silesian Region. Governor Ivo Vondrák welcomed this event, as it will lead to economic development and development of tourism. “Two globally significant events combining to celebrate cultural diversity and connect thousands of people from all over the world in Ostrava’s post-industrial environment is an outstanding opportunity for the Moravian and Silesian Region as a whole. We are preparing various trips throughout the region for the foreign conference participants. I am confident this will be an excellent opportunity to show the world that our region is attractive and has much to offer.”

The timing of the conference could not be better, as year 2018 marks 100 years of the foundation of the independent Czechoslovakia, the republic that existed for 75 years until 1993 when it was dissolved into the two sovereign countries of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. “In celebration of this anniversary, we will tell stories of architecture and design, lifestyle, and the culinary and café scene at the time of renowned Czech brands that continue to make their mark in the world even today. If travel-bloggers arriving for the conference share these stories of our anniversary in 2018 along with their own experiences, the hosting city of Ostrava and entire country may find their place on the maps of desired destinations for many travellers,” said Director of CzechTourism Monika Palatková.

Participants in TBEX Europe 2018 are expected to come primarily from North America and Europe, but a sizeable group from Asia and the rest of the world will undoubtedly be among the visitors. Most TBEX delegates are content creators who create blogs, videos, and podcasts, but about 20 % of the visitors represent destination management organizations (DMO), travel brands, hotel owners, travel agencies, PR and marketing agencies, editors, and publishers of traditional media.

General Director of TBEX Rick Calvert commented on the planned event in the Czech Republic: “We have kept this secret for a long time and cannot wait until July! The TBEX community will love Ostrava and the Moravian and Silesian Region and the Czech Republic as a whole. We believe that the interest in this event will be massive.”
