Delegation from the Moravian-Silesian Region visited partner provinces in China

From 16–23 June 2019, a delegation from the Moravian-Silesian Region led by Deputy Governor for the Environment and Agriculture Jarmila Uvírová and Deputy Governor for Social Affairs Jiří Navrátil visited two provinces in the People’s Republic of China. After signing the “Agreement between the Shanxi Province and the Moravian-Silesian Region on Establishing a Partner Region Relationship” in 2018, the objective of this year’s visit to the Shanxi province was to establish specific cooperation in environmental, social, cultural and educational affairs. Director of the Janáček Conservatory in Ostrava S. Javůrková, Deputy Director of the Moravian-Silesian Research Library M. Oravová and Deputy Director of the Wichterle Grammar School M. Vavroš were therefore included in the delegation.

After arriving in Beijing, our delegation visited the Embassy of the Czech Republic, where it was received by Deputy Head of Mission Klára Jurčová and member of the Embassy’s Economic Section Dalibor Jenne. The purpose of this meeting was to inform the embassy about the activities of the Moravian-Silesian Region in China and coordinate these with the aims of the Czech embassy.

During their stay in the Shanxi province, our delegation visited a retirement home in the provincial capital Taiyuan and a waste incineration plant at the Tongzhou Energy Company. On Tuesday, 18 June, the delegation discussed organizing exchanges for students in gastronomy programmes with the management of the Lihua Grand Hotel. A 10-day professional experience for Czech students at the hotel in autumn 2019 and a stay for Chinese students in our region in spring 2020 were agreed. On Wednesday, 19 June 2019, the delegation visited the Taiyuan Library and participated in negotiations with Vice-Governor Hu Yuting and other provincial officials for education, social affairs, culture, tourism and international relations, then visited the Shanxi University and Shanxi Experimental Secondary School. The management of the Shanxi Experimental Secondary School expressed interest in joint projects proposed by the Matiční and Wichterle Grammar Schools.

On Thursday, 20 June 2019, the delegation left the Shanxi province and travelled to Nanjing, capital of the Jiangsu province, where it visited the Nanjing Museum and learned about the province’s history. Part of the delegation then visited a wastewater treatment plant and led negotiations with officials of the ecology and environment department of the Jiangsu province, while the other part participated in negotiations with the province’s representatives in education. The entire delegation then led negotiations with the province’s Vice-Governor responsible for culture.

On Friday, 21 June, the delegation visited the municipal and regional Nanjing Library, the third largest library in China. The library’s management expressed great interest in cooperating with the Moravian-Silesian Research Library. Negotiations with representatives of the Nanjing University of the Arts and a visit to the university campus followed. The university’s management was also interested in cooperating, and a draft memorandum on cooperation between the University of the Arts and the Janáček Conservatory was presented. The delegation then visited a retirement home and negotiated with representatives of the social affairs department of the Jiangsu province. The day’s programme was concluded with negotiations with Chairman of the Foreign Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Congress Mr. Si Jinquan, who expressed his interest in visiting the Moravian-Silesian Region in autumn this year. After the Saturday tour of Shanghai, the delegation returned to the Czech Republic.

"The visit to the partner province was successful, as the two countries established contacts with cultural institutions and schools, and the conditions for direct cooperation between their employees and students were created. The banning of operating single-track vehicles with combustion engines in Chinese cities in order to improve the environment and seeing only electric scooters in the streets was one of the interesting discoveries of this business trip abroad," added the Deputy Governor for the Environment and Agriculture Jarmila Uvírová.
