Hockey team from the partner Vologda Oblast visits Vítkovice

A hockey tournament for players aged 13 years and under took place at the Moravian-Silesian Hockey Games on 15–17 February 2019 in Ostrava. A team from Vologda in Russia also attended the tournament. This was another project organized by the Moravian-Silesian Region in long-term collaboration with partner Vologda Oblast.

In August 2018, eighth-year players from HC VÍTKOVICE RIDER represented the Moravian-Silesian Region at a tournament in their age category in Vologda, Russia. Players in the same age category from the Russian hockey club then came to Ostrava on 15–17 February 2019 and competed in the Moravian-Silesian Hockey Games for under thirteens against the locals in Vítkovice as well as HC RT Torax Poruba, AZ RESIDOMO Havířov and HC Oceláří Třinec.

Although our guests from Vologda finished fifth and in last position at the tournament, they were still very enthusiastic about their participation and week-long stay in our region. As well as being able compete against four teams from the Moravian-Silesian Region, they also enjoyed a diverse accompanying programme, visiting Dolní Oblast Vítkovice to enjoy the World of Technology, seeing Ostrava from the Bolt Tower and a performance of Snow White on Ice at the Ostravar Arena, and spending the last day of their visit at the Tatra Technical Museum in Kopřivnice.

The hockey tournament was also an occasion for meetings between representatives of the Moravian-Silesian Region and members of Vologda Oblast management about opportunities for developing the long-standing partnership between the two regions. The delegation, led by Deputy Governor Oleg Vasiljev of Vologda Oblast, met with Chancellor Jan Lata of the University of Ostrava, and Deputy Governors Jan Krkoška and Stanislav Folwarczny of the Moravian-Silesian Region. “We are very pleased that after several successful joint cultural and tourist projects, we have also successfully established a partnership in youth sports, specifically hockey, which is the national sport in both our countries, thanks to the Vítkovice hockey players. During our stay in Ostrava, we also discussed new opportunities for collaboration in education between our universities,” said Deputy Governor Vasiljev in appreciation of his visit and already looking forward to returning to Ostrava at the end of this year on the occasion of the Junior World Hockey Championships.
