The Governor met the Chinese Ambassador

The Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region, Ivo Vondrák met the Chinese Ambassador J. E. MA Keqinq at the end of last week, on Thursday 2nd March, 2017.

The Chinese Ambassador has visited our region for the third time. Although the Ambassador only spent one day in the region this time instead of two as during her visit in 2015, her busy program included numerous meetings with public and private entities. As well as visiting the VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava, which cooperates with 20 Chinese universities, the Ambassador participated in the opening ceremony of a factory producing new generation lithium-ion batteries by A123 Systems, and visited the Vítkovice Machinery Group, showing her interest for possible cooperation between this leading regional company and Chinese partners. During her meeting with the Governor, the Ambassador also discussed issues of Czech Republic – China relations and the fostering of cooperation between regions.

The ambassador offered opportunities for internships for students of traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese languages. She mentioned that the 65 Chinese students currently enrolled at the VŠB-TUO are the second largest group of Chinese university students studying in the CR after Prague. The Ambassador stated that research and development is currently frequently cited in China as the keyword for sustainable economy transitioning from an extensive to an intensive system. China’s interest in new technologies is therefore growing.

“We discussed options for cultural exchange such as involving the Chinese embassy’s offer to organise series of interesting exhibitions presenting Chinese cultural heritage. Preparations are underway for establishing a Confucius Institute in the region and the institute will probably operate within the technical university. Concerning new technologies, I have informed the Ambassador that the region’s strong scientific disciplines also work with the private sector in mechatronics, material engineering, biomedicine, security and safety, and power engineering. We have also agreed that the partnership between the Huawei company and the VŠB-TUO is beneficial to both parties with much development potential for using smart technologies (such as atmosphere monitoring sensors) or the capacity of the supercomputer,” Governor Vondrák said about the meeting.
